the ultimate immune boosting guide
Looking for some ideas on how to boost your immune system? Here are simple remedies, supplements, and recipes I use whenever cold and flu season hit.
Apparently the flu has hit hard across the country and unfortunately, we were not immune to this beast.
Let’s just say it has been a week in this household but I will tell you ever since it hit I’ve been bumping up my immune boosters. They’ve basically become my diet and so far I’ve been spared.
I’m literally holding my breath on this one…
Okay, bad joke, but because the flu seems to be everywhere and who knows what other viruses are out there, I thought it was due time to tell you five supplements, tips and recipes I’ve found to boost my immune system. But before we go there, I wanted to answer one question, do germs really spread more in cold weather than warm weather?
why germs spread in cold weather
This question really has two parts. the first is one step in my immune boosting tips, stay warm. Studies have shown recently that our bodies immune systems actually work quicker and better in warmer weather. The colder your body gets the more focus it has to put into staying warm diverting energy away from the immune system. The second reason germs spread more in cold weather is because the cold air actually allows germs to travel farther and faster. In fact, sneezing can allow germ viruses to travel upwards of six feet, of course in the winter time only and this is strictly due to the temperature and humidity.
Let’s use a marshmallow for reference. Think about what happens when you heat up a marshmallow, it becomes moist and expands until the cell structure literally bursts. The same thing happens with germs. When the warm, humid air hits them they expand and cause them to fall and in some cases lose their structure. On the other hand, when germs hit cold air they condense and move quicker {just as your cells do}. Think about a frozen marshmallow, it becomes smaller, denser and more structured. Not to mention it stays completely in-tact. Now, what would happen if you threw a warm fluffy marshmallow compared to a cold one? The cold one would travel much farther and have a greater impact, where the warm one would be lucky to make it to any target.
Basically, the cold weather allows the germs to stay intact and have a greater impact of spreading due to the temperature and climate.
I know it’s silly to use a marshmallow as an example but I hope it helps make sense of this all! Bottom line, stay warm!
5 tips to boost immunity
Let’s start with five things to consider when viruses hit. All things that increase lymphatic flow and help your immune system to keep buzzing.
- Back off on your workouts and opt for walking or low-impact activity.
- Hit the sack earlier than normal.
- Take a few things off your plate. We know that stress is one of the worst things negatively impacting your immune system. Work to decrease it.
- Keep yourself warm. Yes, viruses and germs really do like cold environments {you can read the marshmallow analogy here}.
- Practice plenty of self-care. Things like hot baths, reading just to read, good nourishing comfort food and laughter.
- Avoid the top inflammatory causing foods. These include eggs, dairy, gluten, corn, soy, and sugar.
immune boosting supplements
Of course, everyone has their own idea about supplements. My two-cents is that nearly everyone is deficient in something and could definitely use an added boost. Of course, you must make sure you’re getting high-quality supplements because not all are created equal.
Here are my immune boosting picks for adults:
- Echinacea
- Colloidal Silver
- Zinc
- Vitamin D
- Monolaurin
Here are my picks for kids:
- Elderberry Syrup
- Probiotics {or better Restore}
- Zinc Drops
- Vitamin D for kids
- Intramax Kids
Some of the supplements can be crossed for adults and kids. Like the elderberry syrup is good for adults and kids as is the zinc drops and probiotics. Of course, you should always consult with a practitioner to make sure these are safe for you.
immune boosting products and ideas
There are tons of ways to boost your immune system. I just wanted to share a few practical ways I get it done.
Other Immune Boosting Ideas:
- Bone broth to put in soups or just drink like coffee – Make it homemade or buy some good stuff like this.
- Upping your lymphatic flow: Dry brushing, sauna sessions or vibration plates.
- Hot tea like this kind. Add a little raw honey for an added boost.
- Adding this powerful and simple drink to your morning routine.
- Diffusing oils in your bedroom and house. I like this oil and of course this one to help keep the germs away.
immune boosting recipes
Last but not least, my favorite immune-boosting recipes. Here’s a list of some of my go-to favorites:
- 20 Minute Winter Detox Soup
- All Natural Cold and Flu Remedy
- Citrus Turmeric Drink
- Homemade Bone Broth
- Immune Boosting Mushroom Barley Soup
There’s one thing I know, we do have a lot of power in supporting our immune system. The first step is to know stress both internal and external are extremely harmful to our immune system. Even good things can be too much of a stress on our body when germs hit. So slowing down, stepping back and resting more are going to be key tactics to practice anytime you’re exposed or feel like you’re coming down with something.
